Ericsson wanted to localize the production of 5G base stations in Russia

The Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson is preparing for the process of localizing the production of 5G base stations in the Russian Federation, learned Kommersant . The company does not rule out the possibility of launching its own plant in Russia.

Sources of the newspaper say that Ericsson is considering two scenarios: to build its own enterprise or to find a Russian partner, on the basis of which production can be launched. For the second scenario, Ericsson has already potentially chosen a partner - the Swedish company is considering GS Group (JSC Concern Innovative Technologies) and is conducting a technological audit of the company's production site in Kaliningrad.

Ericsson refused to confirm or deny the information about the search for a partner to localize the production of 5G towers in Russia to Kommersant, saying that the company "is in constant dialogue with the authorities of many countries, including Russia, to realize the potential of 5G and other technologies." The GS Group and Mintsifra declined to comment.

Ericsson is not the first foreign company interested in the possibility of localizing the production of 5G stations in Russia. Finnish Nokia has already signed a similar agreement of intent with the Russian computer manufacturer Yadro, the idea to open production in Russia is also being discussed by Chinese Huawei and ZTE, the newspaper writes. Kommersant notes that the topic of localizing the production of base stations from foreign vendors has become particularly relevant after in August the Ministry of Digital Transformation allowed telecom operators to renew licenses for the use of frequencies for LTE (4G), but on the condition that from 2023 they will use in construction networks, domestic equipment, including those manufactured at joint ventures with foreign companies.
