The Supreme Court of Russia liquidated the International Memorial

The Supreme Court of Russia, at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office, liquidated it, a Mediazona correspondent reports from the court.

Prosecutor Alexey Zhafyarov, speaking in the debate, asked to liquidate Memorial, since, in his opinion, the organization “creates a false image of the USSR as a terrorist state.” His colleague added that Memorial “carries out its activities with gross violations.”

“Even more perplexing are questions about the need for labeling - why is the oldest human rights organization with extensive experience not aware of the law?” - said a representative of the prosecutor's office.

Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov demanded that the organization be liquidated on November 8. He cited violations of the law on “foreign agents” as the reason - Memorial did not label some of its materials, for which it received fines of several million rubles. Human rights activists consider this decision political.

On November 11, the Moscow prosecutor's office demanded the liquidation of the Memorial human rights center. The agency found signs of “justification of terrorism and extremism” in the center’s publications. This lawsuit is being considered in the Moscow City Court.
