
President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev signed a decree on the introduction of a state of emergency in the largest city in the country of Almaty and the Mangistau region, with which gas protests began. This was reported on the presidential website.
The emergency mode will last 1:30 January 5 (22:30 Moscow time) until January 19. The authorities of Kazakhstan motivate such a decision "ensuring public security, restoring the law and law and order, protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens."

On the night of January 4 to 5, protests due to gas prices in the country resulted in large-scale clashes of citizens with security forces in Almaty. People gathered in the square of the republic, from where the security forces ousted them with light school grenades and tear gas. He called on citizens, especially young people, not to succumb to “provocations” and not go into conflict. “The authorities will not fall,” he emphasized separately. Then the first serious clashes using grenades and gas began in Almaty.

Thousands of people in different cities of the country require reducing the price of liquefied gas, which in Kazakhstan, the majority of the population refueling cars, up to 50 tenge per liter, solve the problem of unemployment and reduce food prices. As a sign of support, employees of three oil and gas deposits announced a strike - Kalamkas and Karazhanbas in the Mangistau region, as well as Tengiz in the Atyrau region. The watchmen left their jobs due to the lack of public transport.

The first protests began in the oil city of Zhanaozen. Promotions against increasing the prices of blue fuel also took place in several villages of the Mangistau region.
