The Japanese company Sony plans to develop and manufacture electric vehicles. The new division of Sony Mobility, which will be launched in the spring of 2022, will be responsible for this direction.
Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida spoke about the company's plans to enter the electric car market at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) technology conference in Las Vegas. “We are considering launching the commercial production of Sony electric vehicles,” Yoshida was quoted as saying by The Verge.
Two years ago, at the same conference, Sony introduced a prototype of the Vision-S electric car. In the same year, the car was tested on European roads, and in the spring of 2021 they conducted a test drive using remote control via a 5G network.
The market model of the electric car will be a modified version of the Vision-S called Vision-S 02. The car will have 40 security sensors and an entertainment system, such as video games via a remote connection to the PlayStation, will be built into the car, writes TechCrunch .
The electric vehicle market is booming: in September 2021, Apple announced plans to begin production of electric vehicles in 2024; in October of the same year, the capitalization of Tesla, the market leader in electric cars, exceeded $ 1 trillion - the company's shares soared by almost 10% after the news that the oldest company in the world Hertz will buy 100,000 electric vehicles from Tesla. A month later, Tesla's main competitor Rivian held a successful IPO, as a result of which the company's capitalization at the auction broke through the $100 billion mark.
In 2019, the share of electric vehicles in global car sales was 2.5%, by the end of 2020 it almost doubled to 4.2%. Data for 2021 is not yet available. In addition to companies that develop exclusively electric cars - Tesla, Rivian, Nio, etc. - traditional auto giants - General Motors, Ford, Toyota, BMW, Hyundai, Volkswagen, etc. are increasingly entering the market.
