On the morning of Thursday, January 6, the dollar rose above 77 rubles for the first time since April 2021, briefly moved away from the peak to the region of 76.6 rubles per dollar, but returned to the region of 77 by 11:00 Moscow time. The euro was trading at around 87 rubles.
The main factor behind the fall of the Russian currency was the events in Kazakhstan. Units of Russian peacekeepers through the CSTO, requested by the President of the Republic Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, have already arrived there (more on this here ).
The global macroeconomic context overlapped the geopolitical factor. On the eve of the world indices fell on the details of the December meeting of the Fed - the materials show the possibility of a more decisive increase in the rate (with a concomitant increase in the attractiveness of dollar assets). The sell-off was led by US tech companies, joined today by European equities and cryptocurrencies.
Contributing to the weakening of the ruble is a small volume of trading during the New Year holidays, the lack of foreign exchange support for exporters and weak expectations from the Russia-US talks on security guarantees on January 10th. In the event of a pronounced failure of the negotiations, analysts do not rule out 80 rubles per dollar, writes RBC.
