President of Armenia Sargsyan announced retired

Armenian President Armen Sargsyan resigned. This is stated in the statement published on his website.

“This decision is not at all emotional, it follows a certain logic,” said Sargsyan.

He noted that the Constitution does not give the President of Armenia the necessary instruments of influence on political events in the country.

“This is not easy for our state time when national unity is necessary, the presidency institution should not be the object of gossip and conspiracy theories, distracting the public attention from the most important issues. Today, more than ever, we need meaningful, well -thought -out, deliberate, meaningful actions, ”wrote Sargsyan.

Armen Sargsyan was elected by the President of Armenia in March 2018. After the constitutional reform in 2015, Armenia switched to a parliamentary form of government. The president performs only representative functions, he elects a parliament for a period of seven years.

Prior to the election to the post of President, Sargsyan was a diplomat and worked at the Armenian embassies in Luxembourg, Belgium, Vatican and the UK. In 1996-1997, he headed the government. Before that, he taught at the Physics Faculty of Yerevan State University and at the University of Cambridge in the UK.
