Biden Announces Killing of Islamic State Leader

US President Joe Biden announced the killing of Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Qurashi. The corresponding statement was posted on the White House website.

The operation took place in northwestern Syria. As Biden said, "all Americans returned safely from the operation."

Biden has not yet given any other details, promising to address the nation later.

• Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Qurashi was declared the leader of the Islamic State "caliph" in October 2019. He replaced the group's founder, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was killed in a US-led operation in Syria's Idlib province.
