The military appeal court of the city of Vlasikha in the Moscow region approved a preventive measure for Vadim Bektemirov, a defendant in the Hizb ut-Tahrir case. This was reported by Krym.Realii.
The defense appealed the decision of the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don to extend Bektemirov's arrest until March 16. However, the court rejected the appeal.
Bektemirov is charged with participation in a terrorist organization (Part 2 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code) due to his alleged involvement in Hizb ut-Tahrir. The indictment was approved in March 2021, and in April the defendant was transferred from Simferopol to a pre-trial detention center in the Rostov region in connection with the start of the trial.
- Vadim Bektemirov was detained along with six other Crimeans after mass searches on July 7, 2020, and arrested on July 8. The preventive measure was consistently extended . While Bektemirov was in jail, his father died of a heart attack. He left three young children at large.
- “Crimean Solidarity” writes that before Bektemirov’s arrest, he made dua in support of the families of political prisoners and organized transfers to arrested Crimean Tatars. He holds a Master's degree in Islamic teachings.
- The Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir was recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. Its participants are accused and sentenced to real terms only on the basis that they met in apartments, read religious literature and recruited new participants. According to the SOVA Information and Analytical Center, the party was unlawfully recognized as terrorist in Russia.
