Translator Elena Surits died

The famous translator Elena Aleksandrovna Surits died at the age of 93. Olga Varshaver reports this on her Facebook page.

Elena Surits has translated from English, German, French, Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish since the mid-1960s. Many works by foreign authors were first published in Russian in her translations.

Thanks to Elena Surits, Soviet and Russian readers became acquainted with such works as the stories of Edgar Poe, O'Henry, G. K. Chesterton and Susan Hill, the stories and tales of Per Lagerkvist, Rudyard Kipling, the novels of Knut Hamsun "Pan" and "Rose", “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, “Mrs. Dalloway”, “To the Lighthouse”, “Flush”, “Orlando” and other novels, stories and short stories by Virginia Woolf, “The Notes of Malthe Laurids Brigge” by Rainer Maria Rilke, “Persuasion” by Jane Austen , stories and plays by Samuel Beckett, plays by August Strindberg and many others.

Elena Surits was the winner of a number of awards for achievements in the field of literary translation - “Inolit” (1994, 2010), the British Council “Unicorn and Lion” award (2006), “Master” (2007).
