Alexander Lvovich Yanov was born in 1930 in Odessa, graduated from the Faculty of History of Moscow State University (1953), worked as a high school director in the city of Stalinsk (now Novokuznetsk), a traveling specialist in the Literary Newspaper and Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Published in the magazines "New World", "Young Communist", "Questions of literature" and "Questions of philosophy". He defended his thesis "Slavophiles and Konstantin Leontyev. Degeneration of Russian nationalism. 1839–1891 ".

In the 1970s he emigrated in the United States, taught Russian history and political sciences at the University of Texas, the University of California, and the University of Michigan.
