The United States imposed sanctions against Russian banks

US President Joe Biden announced the introduction of the two largest Russian banks - the State Corporation of the VEB and the Bank of the Russian Military (which Biden had in mind, it may be about Promsvyazbank).

He also stated that tomorrow the United States would continue to impose sanctions against Russian oligarchs. Biden called Russia the action of Russia in Ukraine. According to the US president, Russia, under the leadership of Putin, will try to seize even more Ukrainian territories. In this regard, according to the American leader, he proposed much more significant sanctions in scale and scope than were introduced against Moscow in 2014, in case of further invasion of Ukraine.

The US Department of Finance has introduced three sons of sons of three senior Russian officials to the sanctions list. This is Denis Bortnikov (son of the director of the FSB), Pyotr Fradkov (son of the former director of the SVR) and Vladimir Kiriyenko (son of the First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration). All three also occupy rather high posts: Denis Bortnikov works as vice president of VTB Bank, Pyotr Fradkov heads Promsvyazbank, and the son of Sergei Kiriyenko-the VK group (owner of the VKontakte social network). In addition to VEB and Promsvyazbank, more than 40 companies belonging to them were on the list, including the Russian Premier League football club CSKA.

According to Biden, the United States will continue to help Ukraine and NATO, and also send additional forces to the Baltic countries, since Russia has not yet withdrawn its troops from Belarus. Biden called Putin the recognition of the DPR and LPR by a flagrant violation of international law, and also announced the US readiness to expand the list of sanctions. At the same time, the American president still believes that it is not too late to stop aggression with the help of diplomacy. Biden hopes that the war in Europe will have to be avoided. According to him, the United States does not want a war with Russia, but intend to protect the territory of NATO.

Earlier, the European Union imposed sanctions against 351 deputy of the Russian State Duma, which voted for recognizing the independence of the "DPR" and "LPR". The restrictions will also be introduced against 27 individuals and legal entities, said the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel.

Banks and organizations that, according to the EU, finance the military operations of Russia in the Donbass. President Vladimir Putin is not among them.

On the morning of January 22, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also announced new sanctions against Russian businessmen and banks. The list includes five Russian banks: VEB, Russia, Promsvyazbank, Industrial Savings Bank and Black Sea Bank. Under individual sanctions were businessmen Gennady Timchenko, Boris Rotenberg and Igor Rotenberg.

Against the backdrop of these events, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian abolished the meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who was scheduled for February 25.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in turn, announced the evacuation of diplomatic mission employees in Ukraine. The personnel of the embassy and the Consulate General will be evacuated "in the very near future," the department notes.

New sanctions against Russia are also being prepared in Japan. They can affect the export of semiconductors and high -tech products using artificial intelligence.

• Vladimir Putin decided to recognize state independence of the DPR and LPR on the evening of February 21. On February 22, both "republics", the State Duma and the Federation Council ratified agreements on friendship and mutual assistance. Putin announced the termination of the Minsk agreements.
• The Kremlin’s actions criticized a number of Western countries. The leaders of world states called Putin’s decree by a violation of international law. The OSCE called on Russia to immediately cancel the decision to recognize the "LPR" and "DPR". "The recognition will only incite further tension and separate the population of these regions from the rest of Ukraine," the statement said.
