US President Joe Biden said that he instructed his administration to impose sanctions against the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline operator Nord Stream 2 AG and officials of this company. This is stated on the White House website.

Bayden recalled that Germany decided to stop certification of the gas pipeline. “These steps are another part of our initial package of sanctions in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine. As I made it clear, we will take further steps without hesitation if Russia continues the escalation, ”he said. The Ukrainian leader also thanked the Chancellor of Germany Olaf Sholts for "close cooperation and an unchanged commitment to bringing Russia to justice for its actions."
Later, the US Treasury announced that sanctions are introduced against Nord Stream 2 AG and its executive director of Mattias Varnig.
The Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany suspended the certification of Northern Stream-2 on the eve of the recognition of Russia self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (“DPR” and “LPR”). Sholts said that Germany intends to diversify gas imports together with other European countries, and also continues to work on the development of renewable energy sources.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees on the recognition of the “DPR” and “LPR” on February 21. The next day, the Federation Council agreed to the Russian leader to use the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the LDNR. The decision was made unanimously. It is assumed that Putin himself will determine the term of stay of the RF Armed Forces outside of Russia, their total number, areas of actions and tasks.
On the eve of Biden announced that the United States imposes sanctions against Russian elites, their families, banks and public debt of the Russian Federation. Due to the recognition by Russia, the “DPR” and “LPR” against the Russian Federation were also imposed by the UK , EU , Canada, Japan and Australia .
