A detailed Berlin diary of an American journalist, military correspondent and historian William Shirer, published under the name “take -off and fall of the Third Reich” - the most cited work in the world about Nazi Germany and the Second World War.

William Lawrence Shirer (1904–1993) began working in Berlin in 1934 at the Universal News Service agency, and then, as a CBS journalist, was regularly present at Hitler's performances in the Reichstag and at the congresses of the Nazi party. In 1940, he was a military correspondent on the Western Front and illuminated the occupation of France.

In the same year, Schirer returned to the United States, since military censorship did the work of foreign journalists in Germany almost impossible. In 1941 he published the first part of his Berlin diary.
