The European Union has introduced a new package of sanctions against Russia due to the introduction of troops into Ukraine. The statement is posted on the community website. It is specified that the decision is agreed with the United States. What the EU has decided:
From March 12, VTB, Rossiya, Otkritie, Novikombank, Promsvyazbank, Sovcombank and VEB.RF will be disconnected from SWIFT
since March 2, the broadcasting of the Russia Today TV channel and the work of the Sputnik agency in the EU, as well as the distribution of their content, have been banned
participation in projects co-financed by the Russian Direct Investment Fund is prohibited
it is forbidden to sell, supply, export euro banknotes to Russia
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called it the most impressive package of sanctions.
“At the speed of light, the European Union has adopted three waves of tough sanctions against the Russian financial system, its high-tech industries and its corrupt elite. This is the largest package of sanctions in the history of our union. Today's decision to disconnect key Russian banks from the SWIFT network will send another very clear message to Putin and the Kremlin,” she said.
In addition, the EU promised support to Ukrainian refugees.
Earlier, the head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, said that Russia has a system that can replace SWIFT - the financial messaging system (SPFS). According to her, this is how “the financial infrastructure will work smoothly” within the country.
VTB said that the disconnection from SWIFT would not affect customer service in Russia.
