UN: 516 civilians have died in Ukraine since the start of the war

In the period from February 24 to March 8, during the hostilities in Ukraine, 1,424 civilian casualties were registered, of which 516 people died and another 908 were injured. This was reported in the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

According to the organization, among those killed were 98 men, 60 women, nine boys and five girls, as well as 23 children and 321 adults, whose gender is still unknown. The most common cause of death and injury to people is shelling using heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, rocket and air strikes.

Thus, 111 killed and 462 wounded were registered in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, of which 87 were killed and 349 wounded in the territories controlled by the Ukrainian authorities, and 24 were killed and 113 wounded in the territories controlled by the self-proclaimed republics. In other regions of Ukraine - 405 killed and 446 injured.

At the same time, OHCHR believes that “the actual figures are much higher, especially in government-controlled territory,” as information from areas of intense fighting comes late and needs to be confirmed.

• Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Ukrainian cities have been shelled. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation denies strikes against civilians, stating that they are destroying only military infrastructure.
