The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation demanded that an extremism case be opened against Meta and filed an application with the court to recognize Meta as an extremist organization. Moreover, the department asked to block the largest social network Instagram.

The Russian Investigative Committee has already opened a criminal case in connection with “illegal calls for murder and violence against citizens of the Russian Federation” by employees of the American company Meta, which owns the social networks Facebook and Instagram.

Criminal cases were initiated under Art. 280, 205.1 of the Criminal Code (public calls for the implementation of extremist activities and the promotion of terrorist activities).

“The necessary investigative measures are being taken to provide a legal assessment of the actions of [the company’s press secretary] Andy Stone and other employees of the American corporation,” the Investigative Committee noted.
