FIDE disqualified chess player Karyakina, who supported the war

The Ethics Commission of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) disqualified for six months of Russian grandmaster Sergei Karyakin for "damaging the reputation of chess." It is reported by Sports.ru.

The punishment is due to the fact that Karjakin publicly supported the Russian armed invasion of Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin and continued to support his support, despite the condemnation from FIDE. In the telegram channel of the Russian grandmaster, entitled "Chess Patriotism", posts in support of the war regularly appear. In particular, on March 21, “appeal to adequate Ukrainians” was published, in which Karjakin actually calls on Ukraine to surrender, stating that it has no chance of victory.

The disqualification of Karjakin, in particular, will not allow him to play in the tournament of applicants for the title of world champion, which will be held from June 16 to July 7. Earlier, Karjakin already played in the match for the world championship, but lost to the champion Magnus Carlsen.

Fide did not remove the Russian and Belarusian chess players from the competition, but ordered them to speak under a neutral flag. FIDE President - a former high -ranking Russian official Arkady Dvorkovich - condemned the war and for peace, although he did not directly declare the responsibility of Russia for aggression. He also spoke out in support of Ukrainian chess players. These words caused a sharp reaction of one of the leaders of United Russia Andrei Turchak, who accused Dvorkovich of National Representation. After that, Dvorkovich left the post of President of the Skolkovo Foundation.
