The Buryat court compensated 1 million to the family of a teenager killed in the police

The Supreme Court of Buryatia appointed an additional 1 million rubles to the mother of Nikita Kobelev, whom the police beat to death in the department in 2016. In September 2021, the court also ordered the Buryat police to pay 1 million in favor of the Kobelev family, lawyer Marat Amanliev told TASS.

The court granted the lawsuit of the mother of the deceased teenager partially. The woman demanded 150 million rubles as compensation, as well as official apologies from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Amanliev noted that the plaintiff's party attracted experts from the public organization "Association of Russian Lawyers", who estimated the amount of compensation at 16 million rubles. The request for an apology by the police rejected the Court of Appeal. The agency previously sent a written apology to the mother of the deceased by the signature of the deputy chief of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for Ulan-Ude Bair Baldanova.

According to investigators, Nikita Kobelev choked with vomiting masses during interrogation in 2016. A 17-year-old teenager was suspected of stealing a bicycle. According to parents, the police beat the detainee in order to seek confession. At the same time, he had nothing to do with this crime. First, the young man was taken to the basement of the criminal investigation department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Buryatia, laid on the bench, wrapped with a blanket and secured his body with tape. After refusing to testify, the police put a gas mask on his head and began to beat him. After one of them sat on the teenager from above and squeezed the tube of air fence. According to the prosecution, at that moment the teenager was sick, but the gag could not get out of the gas mask, so Kobelev breathed her and suffocated.

The investigation of the criminal case against the police ended in the summer of 2018. Five police officers were indicated in the indictment. In October 2019, the head of the department for working with personnel, Mikhail Bochenkov, said that the guilt of the employees of the department, the ex-head of the department for the disclosure of property crimes Andrei Pavlov, his subordinate Sergei Plotnikov, as well as the operatives of Valentin Smolin, Anatoly Oloktonov and Tumen Manibarav, have to be proved in court, and only after that personnel decisions will be made. As a result, the court sentenced Pavlov and Oloktonov to 8 and 4 years in prison, Smolin and Manibrav was given for 3 years. Plotnikov received 3 years in prison. All convicts did not admit guilt. During the investigation, they tried to deny that the teenager died in the police department.
