UN: at least 1,119 civilians have been killed since the start of hostilities in Ukraine

Since the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, at least 1,119 civilians have been killed and another 1,790 injured. This is reported by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Among the 1,119 dead were 224 men, 168 women, 15 girls and 32 boys. The sex of another 52 dead children and 628 adults could not be established. 360 people died on the territory of the Lugansk and Donetsk regions, 59 of them on the territory of the “LPR” and “DPR”.

According to OHCHR, 126 children and 1,664 adults have been injured since the outbreak of hostilities. The department believes that the actual number of civilian casualties could be much higher. They also note that most civilians died as a result of shells with a wide radius of destruction - these are shelling of heavy artillery, as well as due to rocket and air strikes.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a "special military operation" in the early hours of February 24. Russia's actions were strongly condemned by the United States, members of NATO and the European Union, as well as many other countries that subsequently imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation.

According to the UN, the number of Ukrainian refugees who left the country exceeded 3.8 million people. On March 20, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said that in total over 10 million Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes, some of them remained in the country and moved to other regions.
