Lithuania was the first in the EU to completely abandon Russian gas. This was stated by the Ministry of Energy of the country.
The ministry noted that the Lithuanian gas transportation system has been operating without Russian gas imports since April 1. All demand in Lithuania is met by the Klaipeda liquefied natural gas terminal.
“This is the result of a long-term consistent energy policy and timely infrastructure decisions,” commented Minister of Energy Dainius Kreivis.
Gas in transit through Lithuania continues to be transported for the needs of Kaliningrad, but in a different technical regime than usual, providing only the transfer of the amount of gas necessary for transit.
- Refusal of Russian gas in Europe began to be actively discussed after the start of the war in Ukraine. At the end of March, the G7 countries announced their readiness to stop buying Russian energy resources and called on other countries that produce gas and oil to "act responsibly and increase supplies to international markets." The G7 also said they would support other countries that want to reduce their dependence on Russian fuel.
- In general, Europe receives more than 40% of its natural gas from Russia. Germany is more dependent on Russian gas than other countries - the share of fuel from the Russian Federation is 50%.
