The Zavolzhsky District Court of Yaroslavl sentenced nine former employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service to terms ranging from three years to three years and four months in the case of the torture of Abubakar Tsagalaev, who was serving his sentence in Yaroslavl Correctional Colony No. 1. This was reported by the Public Verdict Foundation .

Vladimir Balanov, Aleksey Vikharev, Igor Kamironov, Ivan Kokovin, Aleksandr Semenov, Igor Bogdanov, Aleksey Brovkin, Ruslan Tsvetkov and Maksim Yablokov were found guilty of abuse of office (Article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). They will serve their sentences in a general regime penal colony.

As human rights activists note, Bogdanov, Brovkin, Tsvetkov and Yablokov had previously served their sentences in the case of the beating of another prisoner of the Yaroslavl IK-1, Yevgeny Makarov , and for Yablokov this is already the third criminal case.

In February 2021, Novaya Gazeta and Public Verdict published recordings of torture of prisoners in 2016 and 2017. Tsagalaev was hospitalized after the incident, and another convict, Georgian citizen Vazha Bochorishvili, died.
