“We are very tough against these perversions and vulgarity,” the deputy of the Russian State Duma, Alexei Zhuravlev, explained the attitude to homosexuals on the air of the 60 minutes program in August 2021. Then the deputy chairman of the State Duma, Peter Tolstoy, in the program “Time will tell” called the Gheev athletes “perverts”. The deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Trans -Baikal Territory and the head of the ethics commission, Alexander Mikhailov in the beginning of 2022, suggested that the Cossacks would be rubbed with whips, because the ass in Russia was always created, and not for love pleasures, and not for love pleases. ” It is significant that earlier the same figure called for the shooting of the zoo defenders who opposed the extermination of homeless animals. And this is only a small part of the top of the iceberg of homophobic escapades of Russian politicians and public figures.
The Law on the Ban of Gay Propaganda, the removal of Paul Verkhoven’s film “Temptation”, censorship of Bayopic about Elton John, the jokes of the head of state about “transformers” and the constitutional clarification of marriage as a union between a man and a woman-in recent years the topic of sex-minories has become one of the main directions in which moralization was planted and cultivated in Russia Hatred for everything Western. Aggressive rhetoric spurred the paranoia of the population - many had the feeling that the usual world is crumbling, the “correct” values are no longer worth anything, and the insidious homosexuals tend to corrupt the innocent young generation.
Propaganda was carried out at different levels - not least by pro -government television channels. For example, in 2014, a report on an American family was launched on the air of Russia 1, in which parents allegedly decorated the son’s bedroom with images of naked men. The mounted video was soon exposed, but the idea of the danger and fear of the Western “erosion of morals” emanating from homosexuals was still persistently introduced into mass consciousness.
Given the events of the last one and a half months, it could be assumed that the theme of the “rotten West” faded into the background. That is, the West, of course, did not cease to be “rotten”, but primarily because of the sanctions and the negative attitude to the special operation, and the argument with moral decomposition due to the “spread” of sex minorities, as it might seem, was paused. In fact, this is not entirely true. The rhetoric of the last 10 years has taken root, and in the representation of the authorities the two hypostasis of the formidable enemy are equally dangerous: the Americans supposedly, on the one hand, support Ukrainian radicals, and on the other, they try to shake our moral foundations. The idea of the fight against Ukrainian nationalists, which is turning into nationalism, was bizarrely intertwined with the idea of protecting conservative values from Western liberals, LGBT activists, transson and other “transformers”.
The discourse seems to be clear-if we are on protecting all of our own against all the alien, then it is not so important who to oppose: against the national battalions or sex educational. However, intuitively, it still seems contradictory - if only because in the Third Reich, whose legacy is now opposed by Russia, homosexuals were treated with the same caution as Jews or gypsies. Nowadays, the same people call for the final defeat of the successors of the Nazi ideology and speak about sex minorities almost the same as supporters of this very ideology.
How did it happen that Russian conservatives and their like -minded people in other countries do not at all reckon LGBT representatives to the victims of Hitler’s terror? To correct this political and worldview paradox, it makes sense to turn to history and recall what happened to the sexual minorities in Germany before and after the NSDAP came to power.
