
An experiment on the introduction of food products enriched with iodine and use in medical, preschool, educational, sanatorium-resort organizations want to be carried out from September 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026, follows from the draft law developed by Rospotrebnadzor.
The measures will be carried out "in order to ensure the prevention of public health, caused by iodine deficiency conditions."
Among the regions where it is planned to introduce food products enriched with iodine and their use in medical, preschool, educational, spa organizations, as well as retail trade, Novosibirsk, Omsk and Irkutsk region, Altai Territory and Altai Republic, and Khakassia.
For each region, a comprehensive plan for the production of products enriched with iodine and biologically active additives with a roadmap of provision of institutions will be developed.
The heads of regions will be carried out for the implementation of the plan.
As follows from the explanatory note to the bill, iodine deficiency throughout Russia leads to serious consequences: more than 1.5 million adults and 650 thousand children with thyroid diseases need specialized assistance annually.
The cause of 65% of cases of thyroid diseases in adults and 95% in children is the insufficient intake of iodine with food. The annual costs of treatment and medical and social rehabilitation of patients with iodine deficiency conditions are five times higher than the cost of measures for their prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Earlier, Russians encountered problems when buying a drug for the treatment of thyroid gland L-thyroxine. The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation officially issued the regulations for the production of domestic L-tyroxine of the Novosibirsk company. They stated that they were ready to close the needs of all patients in the country.
The average iodine consumption by a resident of Russia is 40–80 μg per day with a physiological need of 150-250 μg. Iodine is an integral part of the thyroid hormones molecules that regulate the endocrine system. In iodine deficiency conditions, the rate of metabolic processes slows down, cognitive functions are reduced, diseases of the nervous and cardiovascular system, metabolic disease, develop. The consequences of iodine deficiency - stillbirth, spontaneous abortion, fetal abnormalities, reproductive disorders, thyrotoxicosis, mental and physical backwardness of children, cretinism.
