Radio Liberty: At least one sailor from the sunken cruiser Moskva has died. The Russian Defense Ministry said the crew had been evacuated

Journalists from "Schemes" found out that at least one sailor from the sunken cruiser "Moskva" died. They managed to establish his identity - it is midshipman Ivan Vakhrushev, the investigation says.

"Schemes" discovered a post on the social network Odnoklassniki by a woman named Varvara Vakhrusheva. On April 15, she published a photo of a man dressed in a Russian Navy officer's uniform with midshipman's shoulder straps.

"Our hero!!! Died doing his duty. Fought to his last breath for the life of the ship. We cry and mourn. You will always remain a hero in our hearts," the caption under the photo says.

Journalists contacted Vakhrusheva on VKontakte. In the correspondence, she confirmed that her husband died as a result of the sinking of the cruiser Moskva. She learned about this from the command on April 14. However, the circumstances of the death of Vakhrusheva's husband were not reported.

According to his wife, Vakhrushev was 41 years old, a native of the village of Nechkino in the Sarapulsky District of Udmurtia, and served in combat unit number five, responsible for the operational safety of the Moskva. In addition, Vakhrusheva told Skhemy that another 27 members of the cruiser's crew were missing.

• On the evening of April 13, it became known about a fire on the cruiser Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The Ukrainian side stated that the fire on the cruiser occurred after it was attacked by Ukrainian anti-ship missiles Neptune.
• Russian news agencies, citing the Russian Defense Ministry, reported that the fire on the cruiser had caused ammunition to detonate and that the crew had been "completely evacuated." The cause of the fire is still unknown. The next day, the ministrysaid that the Moskva had sunk while being towed during a storm and repeated the information about the evacuation of the crew. The Russian military did not specify how many crew members were on the ship or whether any of them were killed or injured.
• On April 16, the Russian Defense Ministry published a video of the meeting between the Navy Commander-in-Chief and the cruiser's sailors. The part of the video where the crew size could have been announced was released without sound. The Insider publication counted about 100 sailors in the video. At the same time, the crew size can reach up to 680 people; in different years, the media reported that the cruiser's crew consisted of 416 or 510 people.
