In Ukraine, they began to dismantle monuments to classics of Russian literature. With Pushkin’s bust in Chernigov, this has already happened. I think this is only the beginning.
If it weren’t for the burning cities of Ukraine, if it weren’t for Bucha and Azovstal, if it weren’t for the tons of lies and dirt, which our television pours to Ukraine and Ukrainians daily, I would have turned to those in Ukraine, whom it depends on not to do this.
I would tell them that I am writing to them as a person who speaks in a Pushkin language - in a language that many of them speak. I would say that Pushkin is a person who “glorified freedom and calling mercy for the fallen”, and this line of his imperial statements that yes, there were many times, but not for them today, people remember him. I would say that the dismantling of monuments to the long -dead Russian writers is a gift from our propaganda and Putin personally. They get one more opportunity to talk about Russophobia and otherwise - so I see their happy faces.
But now not, I will not ask them about anything.
Because after everything that we have done there - and we will do it, alas, they have not only legal - this is their country - but also the moral right to do and say anything.
And it is not for us to teach them, and the more to ask or demand what our propaganda will do now, so that they leave the symbols dear to us on their land. They are not obliged to reckon with our feelings, to think about how one or another action will affect us, how to strengthen the positions of believers in the letter Z, how it will make the situation with us even more nauseating. They must do - and do - everything that they consider correct for themselves and their country.
But the dismantling of monuments is only the first swallow of the advancing future. No Russian world - not the hypocritical lies that our authorities fulfill, but the real Russian world, the world of Russian culture, the Russian language, the world of Pushkin and Brodsky - will not be anywhere outside Russia and the communities of Russian emigration in the foreseeable future. The center of the Slavic Orthodox civilization will now be in Kyiv, and the Russian language will be perceived as the language of aggression, violence and lies. Probably, this rejection will pass as passed in relation to German culture and the German language, but it will pass soon and only with very serious efforts on our part - when recognizing responsibility for the perfect, with readiness to pay reparations and so on.
We, speaking in Russian, can, of course, be sad about this and curse those who started this whole nightmare, forcing Tolstoy and Akhmatov to be responsible for their crimes.
But it would be better not to limit yourself to this. It is better to remember how much evil our country made. The list only in the XX century is amazing. Gulag and revolutionary terror, detachments and SMERSH, BESSURENCE OF THE BECOUSE OF THE FEARNENSEN REGULATION AND Entire oceans of lies and hypocrisy. And also Prague, Afghanistan, Grozny. And all this was done by people who spoke in Russian who read Chekhov and former an integral part of the very great Russian culture, of the destruction of which we rightly accuse our authorities today.
So our brilliant collision with Ukraine is not from an empty place. We have been behaving like that for a century already. And if we want to ever be different, it is necessary not only to change the political system, not only to condemn the immediate perpetrators, but also to understand, to realize-and no one except us will do this-what kind of virus is in our culture, which sometimes falls asleep, but never leaves that this is the disease, which is returned under different names again and again?
Of course, this is not only our problem. The Nazis also read Goethe, and this did not prevent Auschwitz. But this is the case of the Germans, with whom they cope well. Certainly better than us. But why our culture - our songs and fairy tales, our domestic traditions and our great writers did not prevent all these nightmares, past and real, or even contributed to them - to understand this. May the titans of Russian literature forgive me.
