In Minsk, at the age of 87, the first head of independent Belarus, Stanislav Shushkevich, died. This was reported by Euroradio with reference to the wife of Shushkevich Irina.

Stanislav Shushkevich suffered Koronavirus. In April, he had complications after illness and he was taken to intensive care. Later he was discharged. He died of the consequences of the disease.

Stanislav Shushkevich in 1991-1994 headed the Supreme Council of Belarus of the 12th convocation. In 1991, he signed Belovezhsky agreements that stated the collapse of the Soviet Union, declaring the sovereignty of Belarus.
In the summer of 1994, Shushkevich participated in the first presidential elections in Belarus, in which he took fourth place, receiving 9.91% of votes. The winner of the election was Alexander Lukashenko.
In September 2021, it became known that in the new textbooks on the history of Belarus for the 11th grade of schools there are no references to the first leader of the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union Stanislav Shushkevich and the Nobel Prize in Literature Svetlana Aleksievich. Both after the 2020 presidential elections, which caused the most massive protests in the history of Belarus, performed with a sharp criticism of the current head of state Alexander Lukashenko.
