The Alpina Non-Fixes publishing house publishes the book of the English philosopher John Selhars "The Philosophy of Serence: Tetrafarmacos Epicurus." Tetrafarmacos - epicurean teaching, healing from anxieties and fears and based on the atomistic theory - they understood for a long time incorrectly. The author explains why, and how the knowledge of the world around helps to get rid of anxieties and fears.
With the kind permission of the publisher, we publish the chapter about why you should not be afraid of death.
It is not known when exactly and how, but we all at some point die and know about it. In many ways, this is the most important fact for our existence. He defines people as mortal creatures. It limits the amount of time at our disposal, which makes us rush with plans and plans. The fact that we do not know when this moment comes is also alarming. And finally, the question arises of what will happen-if there is something at all-after death.
Tetrafarmacos Filodem advises us not to fear death. Epicur himself spoke even more clearly: "Death has nothing to do with us." This topic has become central to Epicurean philosophy, therefore it can be assumed that the fear of death was characteristic of antiquity and required understanding. Epicurus analyzed this question in a letter to Menkei, Lucretius in his great poem added new arguments, and Filodem devoted a whole treatise in four parts to this topic.
