According to the hackers, about 75% of RuTube's databases and infrastructure were damaged, and 90% of the backup was "severely damaged."

At the same time, the service confirmed that it had encountered a major cyber attack. “Restoration will take longer than engineers initially expected,” RuTube representatives added.

On the morning of May 9, hackers attacked the Russian video hosting site Rutube, which positions itself as a replacement for Youtube and where many Russian pro-state TV channels moved after the start of the “special operation.” Information about this appeared in the company’s telegram at seven in the morning. It was also reported that the operational response team is working to restore access to the service.

Throughout the day, messages appeared on the company’s channel that restoration work was underway on the site. At 20:04, the company announced that the cyberattack was the largest in the history of the service. According to representatives of the service, it was expensive, pre-planned and was needed to “prevent Rutube from showing the victory parade and fireworks.” However, the site is still unavailable.

According to The Village source close to the Rutube team, the attack began around five in the morning. As a result of the hackers’ actions, the site code was “completely removed”, and now the video service “cannot be restored.” Usually, backups are provided for such a case, but in a particular situation, the problem, apparently, is that the service still does not understand whether the hacker still has access to the system or no longer. The video content was not damaged as a result of the attack. According to the source, such a cyber attack became possible due to the leak of access codes to the site.

In early April, the Ministry of Education and Science sent letters to universities with a recommendation to transfer content from Youtube video hosting to the Russian platforms Rutube and VK.Video.
