
The Riga Duma at the meeting voted for the demolition of the monument to the Soviet soldiers of the Second World War, located in the area of Pardaugava. The 3rd deputies voted, against - 13.
Shortly before the vote in the City Duma on the Town Hall Square in Riga, a rally was held against the demolition of the monument. The action was not agreed with the authorities. The police detained the leader of the Russian Union of Latvia, the deputy of the European Plan Tatyana Zhdanok and a few more people. It is known that one person was detained for carrying a St. George ribbon, three more for participation in an unauthorized picket.
The Governor of the Leningrad Region Alexander Drozdenok said that he was ready to place a monument in the region if the Riga authorities dismantle it. The official promised to find a "worthy place" for the monument.
On the eve of the Diet of Latvia, a majority vote approved a decision that makes it possible to demolish the monument. The deputies supported the bill, which provides for the termination of the 13th article of the Latvian-Russian Treaty, ensuring the safety of memorial structures. The decision was made against the backdrop of the invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine.
