Kirill Serebrennikov addressed the audience in Cannes in Russian: “No to war”

Director Kirill Serebrennikov presented his new film Tchaikovsky's Wife at the Cannes Film Festival and spoke out against the war in Ukraine. Film critic Anton Dolin, who is in Cannes, told Meduza about this.

Speaking with a speech, Serebrennikov turned to the audience and said in Russian: "No to war." He expressed the hope that people of art would do everything possible to end the war and return peaceful life to Europe.

At the end of March, a court in Moscow canceled the probation of Kirill Serebrennikov, who had previously been found guilty of particularly large-scale fraud in the Seventh Studio case. Shortly thereafter, the director left Russia .

Serebrennikov's film "Tchaikovsky's Wife" was shown in Cannes as part of the main competition of the film festival.

• The 75th Cannes International Film Festival runs from 17 to 28 May. The organizers of the festival decided not to receive official Russian delegations because of the war in Ukraine.
• As part of the special screenings at Cannes, the Natural History of Destruction film by Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa will be presented, while Ukrainian director Maxim Nakonechny will compete for the Un Certain Regard and Golden Camera awards with The Moth View. In addition, the film festival will show the film "Mariupoli 2" by the Lithuanian documentary filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravichyus, who died in Mariupol during filming.
• On March 17, at the opening ceremony of the film festival, a video message from the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky was shown. During a ten-minute speech dedicated to the war in Ukraine, he quoted from the films "The Great Dictator" by Charlie Chaplin and "Apocalypse Now" by Francis Ford Coppola, and also remembered the heroes of the films "Life is Beautiful" by Roberto Benigni and "Inglourious Basterds" by Quentin Tarantino.
