UN: The number of refugees in the world for the first time exceeded 100 million

The number of refugees and internally displaced persons forced to leave their homes due to violations of human rights and violence, for the first time in the history of observations, exceeded the mark of 100 million. Such data were published on Monday in Geneva by the Office of the UN Supreme Commissioner for Refugees.

This was largely due to the war in Ukraine, experts say. According to the UN calculations, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 14 million Ukrainians have become refugees. Six million of them left the country, and eight million were forced to leave their homes and became internally displaced faces.

The report of the Monitoring Center for Internal Movement (IDMC) says that the current number of refugees in the world already exceeds one percent of the world's population. These calculations include people who left their countries, ask for political asylum abroad, as well as 53.2 million people who have become internal refugees due to conflicts in their countries.
