The Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Valery Falkov, said that the department intends to abandon the Bologna system of higher education.

"We should treat the Bologna system as a thing of the past. The future belongs to our own unique education system, which should be based on the interests of the national economy and the maximum space of opportunities for each student," the minister told Kommersant.

Russia joined the Bologna Process on September 19, 2003. Among other things, it provides for a two-tier education system - a bachelor's degree (4 years of study) and a master's degree (2 years). At the same time, Russia continues to study according to the specialist program, which was adopted from the USSR and which implies study for 5-6 years.

Discussions about the advisability of Russia's participation in the Bologna Process have been ongoing for several years and have resumed against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the worsening relations between the Russian Federation and the West. In the last week alone, among others, the Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev and the Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy have proposed abandoning the Bologna education system.
