A referendum on accession to Russia was suspended in South Ossetia

The new president of the self -proclaimed South Ossetia Alan Gagloev suspended a referendum on the entry of the republic into Russia. Earlier, the former head of the republic Anatoly Bibilov appointed voting on July 17, TASS reports .

Gagloev insists on consulting with the Russian side on issues related to further integration of the republic. Before the end of negotiations, the decree on the referendum has been suspended.

• Until 1990, South Ossetia was an autonomous region as part of the Georgian SSR, since 1992 it existed as an unrecognized state. • The Kremlin stated that it was not related to the idea of holding a referendum. Georgia did not support sanctions against Moscow after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
