Navalny charged in extremism case

Politician Alexei Navalny announced that he had been charged in a criminal case on extremism. This post was published on his social networks.

It turns out that I created an extremist group to incite hatred towards officials and oligarchs. And when I was jailed, I dared to be dissatisfied with this (really, that was me) and called for rallies. For this, I should get another 15 years.

According to Navalny, an investigator visited him in the penal colony on May 31 and “officially presented charges.”

The politician does not disclose the details of the case. It is known that back in September 2021, the Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case on the creation of an "extremist community" and participation in it against Navalny and his associates.

The Investigative Committee’s statement at the time stated that the activities of the “extremist community” created by Navalny and his associates were aimed at “discrediting government bodies, destabilizing the situation in the regions, shaping public opinion about the need for a violent change of power, as well as organizing and holding protests that would escalate into mass riots.”

• In February 2021, Alexei Navalny was found guilty of slandering war veteran Ignat Artemenko. Taking into account the replacement of the politician's suspended sentence of three and a half years in prison with a real one in the so-called "Yves Rocher" case, Navalny was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison.
• Following the trial for "defamation of a veteran", a criminal case for contempt of court was opened against Navalny. It was later combined with a fraud case opened in late 2020, in which Navalny was accused of spending funds raised for the FBK and campaign headquarters on personal needs. On March 22, the politician was sentenced to nine years in a maximum-security penal colony for fraud and contempt of court. On May 24, the Moscow City Court upheld the sentence, and it came into force.
