The Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation declared the Committee Against Torture a “foreign agent” (for the third time)

The human rights association "Committee against Torture" was included in the register of unregistered associations performing the functions of a "foreign agent". The corresponding register of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation was updated on the evening of June 10.

As noted, the goals of the activities of the “Committee against Torture” are “representing the interests of the applicant in the investigating authorities and in court; assisting in obtaining compensation, as well as, if necessary, carrying out medical rehabilitation measures.

A few hours before the “Committee against Torture” entered the register of the Ministry of Justice, the organization published a report on its activities in the spring of 2022.

• The Committee Against Torture was founded in 2000 by Igor Kalyapin, a human rights activist from Nizhny Novgorod. One of the latest high-profile cases dealt with by the lawyers of the "Committee" was the persecution by the Chechen authorities of the family of the former judge Saidi Yangulbaev. Now Kalyapin is a member of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation.
• In January 2015, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation entered the interregional public organization "Committee against Torture" into the register of "foreign agents". Because of this, the organization was liquidated, and instead a new one was formed - the "Committee for the Prevention of Torture". But in January 2016, the Ministry of Justice declared this organization a "foreign agent." She was also eliminated. After that, the "Committee against Torture" worked in Russia without forming a legal entity.
