During the war in Ukraine, everyone learned about the Turkish drones of Bayractar - the drones purchased by the Ukrainian military destroyed Russian equipment, impressive videos appeared on the Internet and largely changed the perception of the war. In the background of this success of the Turkish military industry, the new wave was versed in the New Yorker magazine Stephen Witt; With the permission of the publication, the Mediazone publishes a translation of the material that published on May 9.
In the end of February, a video appeared on the page of the Commander -in -Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny: columns of Russian equipment approaching Kherson. A few days before, Russia invaded Ukraine, and Kherson, the shipbuilding center at the mouth of the Dnieper, occupied a strategically important situation. The center is visible in the center, which “captures” the truck in the middle of the column, and a few seconds later it explodes, and a fire pillar rises into the sky. “That's what the Life -giving Bayractar creates! - I signed the video of the hearing. “ Welcome to hello!”
“Bayractar TB-2” is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), flat and gray, with wide wings and a screw on the tail. On board he can carry air bombs with laser guidance; It is so small that it is placed in the truck’s body - and it costs many times less than American and Israeli analogues. Its designer Selchuk Bayractar is one of the leading weapons manufacturers in the world. During the war in Ukraine, Bayractar found a halo of real legend: in honor of it they named the newborn Lemur in the Kiev Zoo and composed a song about how he was.
The first confirmed death as a result of shelling with TB-2 is April 2016. Since then, the Turks have sold such drones of at least thirteen states, giving developing countries the opportunity to apply high -precision air strikes, which fundamentally changed the course of several wars. In 2020, during the next conflict in, the authoritarian leader Ilham Aliyev used TB-2 against the enemy technology and manpower, and then showed a video of shelling on street screens in Baku.
“TB-2” has been inflicted over 800 strokes today-if you calculate by all wars from North Africa to the Caucasus. The missiles with which it is equipped are able to change the trajectory in flight; They are so accurate that they can be aimed at the trench. Military analysts previously believed that in the usual fighting of drones that fly slowly and low, almost useless, but “TB-2” can attack the air defense means that should knock them down. “The understanding of how to wage war has changed dramatically,” says Rich Outzen, a former US State Department and a Turkish specialist. “This probably happens every 30-40 years.”
With the Selchuk by Bayractar, we talked in March from the video. He was in the Istanbul headquarters of his company Baykar Technology, in which more than two thousand people work. When asked about the use of his drones in Ukraine, he answered this way: “They do exactly what they were created for - destroy some of the most advanced air defense systems and armored vehicles in the world.” Bayractar is 44 years old, he has a soft look and a slightly twisted nose. He sat surrounded by models of new drones on transparent plastic racks and showed them with the undisguised pride of the aviation guide. “When a new drone is released, I take it to manage it, I just adore it,” he said. Bayractar has more than two million subscribers on Twitter , where he writes about youth educational programs, Turkish heroes and new designs of aircraft. “Many consider him a sort of Ilon Mask,” says Federico Donelli, an international relation specialist from the University of Genoa.

In May 2016, Bayractar married Semey Erdogan, the youngest daughter of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to political scientist Svante Cornell, Erdogan’s political Islam sets his goal “building a powerful industrialized state, which will become the natural leader of the Muslim world.” Over the past twenty years, the Turkish military -industrial complex has grown ten times, and most weapons have been produced within the country. ““ Bayractars ”in general and“ TB-2 ”in particular became the flagships of Turkish defense industry,” says the Turkish retired diplomat Alper Joshkun.
Türkiye borders with Iran, Iraq, Syria, Armenia, Georgia and the European Union, and through the Black Sea - Russia. According to Donelli, diplomatic intricacies in the region remind him of the times on the eve of the First World War. “Bayractar for the Turkish authorities is a genius who can change the historical path of Turkey,” he says.
Erdogan in power in Turkey. During this time, he managed to subjugate the courts and the media, made amendments to the Constitution and began to promote the return to the “traditional” role of women in society. Critical journalists are beaten by bits and reinforcement, opposition activists are put in jail for decades. But the Turkish economy stagnates, and inflation over the past year has grown to 70%. In 2019, the candidate from the Erdogan party lost in the elections of the Istanbul mayor - this post after Erdogan was held by his associates.
“TB-2” was literally a gift for propaganda, and Erdogan took advantage of his success to advertise his vision of the Turkish future. As Bayractar himself said, “in our time the most noticeable changes in the world occur thanks to technology - and who is behind these changes? Those who create these technologies. ”
Bayractar with his family lives right on the territory of his technological complex , which compares with a university campus. There are even sports facilities and the park - according to him, "more than Google." While we talked, his mother Janan, the wife of Sumey and a 4-year-old daughter, who is also called Janan, dined in the next room. Bayractar said that in his 44 he is one of the oldest engineers in the company, and there are many women among the developers. “I have programmatic from my mother,” he is sure.
Selchuk Bayractar was born in Istanbul in 1979, the middle of the three brothers. Their father Ozdemir, the son of a fisherman, graduated from the Istanbul Technical University and founded a company for the production of auto parts; Mother Janan was an economist and a programmer in the era of the punch. The brothers very early found out what the machine is. “We have been working at our factory since childhood,” Bayractar said. To the senior classes of the school, he was already a highly qualified specialist. His father was also fond of amateur aircraft, and the boy Selchuk studied the geography of Turkey from the window of his father's aircraft. “He was very small, flying on it - how to walk on a yacht,” he recalled. “You feel like a bird.” The teenager Bayractar began to assemble radio -controlled planes from finished sets, sometimes a little changing their design: “I hid my models under the bed, worked secretly on them. I had to prepare for exams. ”
The prototypes of radio -controlled Bayractar aircraft impressed researchers. In 2002, he graduated from Istanbul technological and entered the University of Pennsylvania in the USA for the master's program. Its graduation project is the synchronous flight of two drones at the Fort Benning military base. He received the second master's degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he solved an extremely complex and unusual task: planting a radio -controlled helicopter on the wall. His supervisor Eric Feron remembers Bayractar with a skilled engineer and a zealous Muslim, a passionate idea of young people's formation. He recalls with what excitement Bayractar was engaged in mathematics with his daughter and showed the Gerl-Scout detachment, how his helicopter flies. “He was a good pilot,” Feon says. “But I did not understand how good he was until he visited his wedding.”
When Bayractar studied at the university, the Americans used Predator drones against goals in Iraq and Afghanistan. He did not approve of the foreign policy of the United States (“I was obsessed with the ideas of Noam Khomsky,” Bayractar himself admitted) and participated in protests with other students, for the most part - foreigners. But drones carried him away. Even while studying at MIT , he began to make his first prototypes of small drones at the family factory in Istanbul.
Ozdemir Bayractar decided that the development of his son was worthy of state support. He was in good relations with the professor of mechanical engineering Nedzhmetin Erbakan, the Islamic nationalist and ardent critic of Western culture. Türkiye has been a secular republic since the 1920s, but Erbakan believed that it was necessary to build a flourishing Islamic nation, investing in industry and engineering talents. In 1996, he won the election of the Prime Minister, but soon left the post of pressure from the military-the Turkish army was then more influential and forced him to leave politics for trying to violate the division of the state and religion enshrined in the constitution. (Erbakan himself, who had ties with the “Muslim brothers” and Hamas, blamed the external “Zionist” forces in everything.)
Selchuk Bayractar told Erbakan about his developments, and by the middle of the zero he had already spent most of his student holidays at Turkish military bases. His family also had a connection with the Protective of Erbakan-Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who became the Prime Minister in 2002. Ozdemir Bayractar was his adviser when Erdogan was still the mayor of Istanbul, and Selchuk remembers how the future premiere was at their home.
The first drone that Bayractar developed was called “mini”, weighed less than five kilograms and launched from his hands. At first, he could fly only a few meters, but Bayractar improved the structure, and soon a small drone could stay in the air for more than an hour. The tests took place in the snowy mountains of the Southeast Anatolia: the drone followed the positions of the militants of the separatist labor party of Kurdistan (RPK). Feron remembers his surprise when he called Bayractar, and he was in the mountains: "He went on the front line without hesitation, in the most stringent conditions, lived with soldiers to receive reviews directly from technology users." Bayractar admitted that he prefers to test drones in real combat conditions: “They should be reliable, hardened in battles. If they do not fly at an altitude of three thousand meters or at minus thirty, they will be a useless cargo in a backpack behind their backs. ”
Soon, Bayractar began work on a drone of more impressive size. In 2014, he introduced the prototype “TB-2”, a screw aircraft capable of carrying ammunition. That year, Erdogan, having exhausted the terms of his premier, went to the presidential election and won them. Later, a referendum was held in Turkey, which actually transferred control over the courts to him, and the persecution of political opponents began in the country.
“Not only a quarter of all the current admirals and generals were arrested, but also many oppositionists,” says Soner Chagaptai, the author of four biographies of Erdogan. Bayractar dedicated his prototype of the memory of the now deceased Erdoganov mentor - Erbakan. “He laid his life to change the culture of the country,” the designer himself said. (In the posthumously published memoirs, Erbakan claimed that for the past 400 years, the Jews secretly ruled the world.)
In December 2015, Bayractar conducted the first tests of high-precision airstrikes with TB-2. To guide the training shells, a laser was used, and from a distance of eight kilometers, the drone was able to hit the target the size of the bedspread. By April 2016, military shells were already put on TB-2. The RPK objects were its first goals: drones killed at least two dozen leaders of Kurdish separatists, as well as everyone who was nearby.
These small operations showed Bayractar the importance of monitoring radio. Disruptions are controlled by radio communications, and the signal can be drowned. You can bypass this vulnerability by changing the frequency or increasing the signal power.
“There are a lot of jammers in Turkey, because RPK also uses drones,” said Bayractar. “The conditions for flights are very tough.” The Turkish unmanned punitive operation was the first case when the country used combat drones against its own citizens, but Bayractar, referring to a terrorist threat, remains its ardent defender.
It was then, in May 2016, he married the president’s daughter. Five thousand guests were invited to the wedding, including many representatives of the political elite. Semey was in a hijab and an exquisite white dress with long sleeves of the Parisian brand Dice Kayek. By that time, the Turkish state was noticeably Islamized. In the 1990s, it was forbidden to appear in a hijab in universities and public buildings. Now, as Chagaptai wrote, "the wife in the hijab has become a ticket to the Erdogan administration." Bayractar regularly tweaks Muslim blessings, and his wife and eldest daughter Janan appear in public in a hijab.
Semey, like Selchuk, belongs to the second generation of the Islamist elite of Turkey. In 2005, she studied on a sociologist at the University of Indian. “She is a man of the highest moral qualities,” Bayractar emphasized. “A real fighter.” Others consider Sumey the personification of a more fashionable and to some extent feminist production of paternal politics-something like the Turkish version of Ivanka Trump. “Under Erdogan, women lost their political influence,” says Chagaptai. “If they are assigned to the government, then strictly for the sample.”
In June 2016, terrorists associated with the Islamic State killed 45 people at the Istanbul airport. Soon, Türkiye opened a new front in Syria, where she used the “Bayractars” to strike a not -free creeping caliphate - soon the drones were redirected to the Syrian Kurds. In July, a small group of high -ranking Turkish military tried to arrange a coup . He was poorly planned and did not receive broad support - the main opposition parties condemned the putschers, one of the conspirators from the fighter struck the Turkish parliament, and an attempt at the hotel was arranged for the president. The surviving Erdogan accused of the conspiracy of the followers of Fethullah Gulen, the opposition and the Islamic thinker, who has long been living in exile - in the American state of Pennsylvania; Gulen himself denies his involvement in the coup. Over one hundred thousand civil servants were repressed. Bayractar against this background became close to Erdogan, and his drones began to actively sell abroad.
In Turkey, the engineer became a real star, and his social networks are littered with patriotic comments of subscribers. When he speaks in front of cadets - and he does it often - he puts on a leather jacket with flight stripes. When he travels to universities - and he does it at least - he puts on a turtleneck and a jacket. During our conversation, he mentioned the terms of Gender Studies, reasoned that Russia was violating international legislation, and quoted Benjamin Franklin: “Those who are ready to sacrifice freedom for the sake of a small fraction of temporary security are worthy of either freedom or safety.”
At the same time, the Bayractar ardent defender of the Turkish authorities. In 2017, the post of prime minister was abolished at the constitutional referendum-the president, in fact, received unlimited control over the country. With the help of politically motivated tax audits, the authorities pressed independent media, and then at auctions with one participant - handed over their assets to their supporters. Many journalists got into prison for the "insulting the president." Erdogan often suits representatives of the press - like Bayractar. Recently, for example, it was fined Chigd Toker, which investigated the activities of the charity fund with which it is associated. Bayractar then wrote on Twitter: "Journalism: lying, false, shameless."
The elder brother Haluk Bayractar holds the post of general director Baykar, and Selchuk - the technical director and chairman of the board. (Their father died last year.) In addition to Ukraine and Azerbaijan, TB-2 supplied Nigeria, Ethiopia, Qatar, Libya, Morocco and Poland. Our conversation with Bayractar took place immediately after the Baykar meeting with potential buyers from Asia, who are interested in TB-3, the next model of drone, which can be launched from ships.
According to several media, one TB-2 costs about a million dollars, but Bayractar assured that the real price is higher, although he did not clarify-how much. Be that as it may, the numbers are deceptive: drones are sold together with the “platform” - portable controls of management and communications. In 2019, Ukraine bought at least six TB-2, and in the news about the transaction appeared $ 69 million. The comparable park of the American drones Reaper would cost six times more. “He perfectly falls into the middle ground,” Bayractar himself is sure. “He is not too small and not too large, not too cheap, but not too expensive.”
