The case of Zarema Musaeva was transferred to the Grozny court

The case of Zarema Musaeva, the mother of Chechen activists Ibragim and Abubakar Yangulbaev, was transferred to the Leninsky District Court of Grozny. Musaeva’s son Abubakar wrote about this in his Telegram channel with reference to lawyer Natalya Dobronravova.

Chechen security forces forcibly took Musaeva from Nizhny Novgorod to Chechnya on January 20. They came to the home of her and her husband, retired judge Saidi Yangulbaev.

The criminal case against Musaeva will be considered by Judge Akhmed Bashuev. After the abduction, the same judge arrested her for 15 days under the article of petty hooliganism (Part 1 of Article 20.1 of the Administrative Code), notes Yangulbaev. A preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.

The court in Grozny sent Musayeva to a pre-trial detention center on February 2. She was charged with an article on the use of violence against a government official (Part 2 of Article 318 of the Criminal Code). According to investigators, the woman scratched the policeman's face when he was drawing up a report on her. On June 10, the court extended the arrest until July 12.

• At the end of 2021, Musaeva’s son, an employee of the “Committee against Torture” Abubakar Yangulbaev, had his apartment in Pyatigorsk searched, after which he was interrogated by police officers. At the same time, his relatives were kidnapped in Chechnya: they were later released, but as of January 19, at least two people were still kidnapped. Abubakar Yangulbaev connected the incident with the fact that he and his brother are suspected of involvement in the opposition telegram channel “1ADAT”.
• On January 23, it became known that about 15 relatives of Abubakar Yangulbaev living in Chechnya have not been in contact since the abduction of Zarema Musaeva. Yangulbaev suggests that they too could have been kidnapped by Chechen security forces in order to put pressure on him.
• Brothers Ibragim and Abubakar Yangulbaev and their father, retired judge Saidi Yangulbaev, were tortured in Chechnya in 2015, Ibragim spoke about this. He connects the persecution of his family with his activist activities and criticism of the Kadyrov regime.
