The international peer-reviewed scientific journal Vaccines published a study on the EpiVacCorona vaccine conducted by American biologist Olga Matveeva and Meduza science journalist Alexander Ershov. At the end of January, the results of this study were described in an article on Meduza and in a separate manuscript ; now the study has undergone a full scientific peer review and has been accepted for publication.
The main result of the work was that it showed that EpiVacCorona is not able to protect those vaccinated against coronavirus. At the same time, based on the same data, the researchers saw that another Russian vaccine, Sputnik V, was effective in this task.
The vaccine effectiveness of EpiVacCorona measured by the authors for certain age groups even went into the negative area, that is, those vaccinated got sick more often - this is explained, among other things, by more risky behavior after vaccination, which can give those vaccinated a false sense of security.
- The study was conducted based on data on the incidence of the disease in Moscow in mid-2021. Meduza received this data from a source with access to the Moscow disease monitoring system, which recorded, among other things, a breakdown of cases by vaccination status (vaccinated or not, one or two doses) and by the drug used. The study also used data on the dynamics of vaccination with different drugs, obtained from a public QR code system.
- At the same time as the Meduza study, researchers from the European University led by Anton Bartschuk independently came to the conclusion that EpiVacCorona is ineffective. In their work, they relied on their own data on the incidence of COVID in St. Petersburg.

One of the reviewers of the study was virologist Konstantin Chumakov, Deputy Director for Science, Leading Researcher and Laboratory Director of the Vaccine Research and Analysis Division of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
