Finland will be able to install a fence on the border with the Leningrad region

The Finland Parliament adopted a law that allows you to set a 1300 kilometer fence on the border with the Leningrad region. This was reported by Reuters.

Finland explains the need to protect refugees with a problem and a desire to regulate the flow of citizens who ask the country of asylum from the country. Additional financing will be allocated for the construction of the fence of the border service.

The initiative was approved by the parliamentary majority, despite the fact that it contradicts the European Union, regarding the provision of asylum.

The Russian side has not yet commented on these changes.

After the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Finland announced the intention to join NATO in order to protect her borders. If this happens, the border of Russia with the NATO member country will increase by more than 1.2 kilometers. At the moment, Finland, along with Sweden, signed a protocol on entry into the North Atlantic Alliance and is waiting for the ratification of 30 countries of the Union.

The Russian side previously stated that the Finnish authorities "should be aware of the responsibility and consequences of such a step." The Russian Foreign Ministry believes that Finland’s accession to NATO will cause serious damage to the bilateral Russian-Finnish relations, maintaining stability and security in the North European region.
