Russian Internet providers began to insert on sites without https propaganda propaganda

Almost all Russian mobile operators and some “wired” Internet providers replace traffic so as to insert the HTTPS encryption protocol with materials that justify the war with Ukraine. The Insider said this in the human rights project "Roskomsvoboda".

A few days ago, the Twitter user @mossobyaniin drew attention to this. He wrote that the Provider Rostelecom inserted exiles to articles about the war, published in Russian pro -government media.

The unnamed source of The Insider spoke about a similar situation. According to him, his friend - the owner of the dental clinic - turned to him for help, seeing advertising with the propaganda of war on his clinic’s website.

When checking, it turned out that advertising appears if you enter the site through Beeline and Megafon mobile operators. They inserted similar advertising on other sites operating on the HTTP protocol. The sites on the HTTPS protocol functioned normally, since it is impossible to introduce foreign code from the operator into them, the source of The Insider said.

“The only solution to the situation is to transition of the site to HTTPS protocol. But many owners of small businesses who have simple sites do not know how to do it, and usually such a transition is accompanied by additional financial costs, which not everyone can afford, ”the interlocutor of the publication explained.

• Rostelecom and other Russian Internet providers previously inserted contextual advertising on sites without HTTPS. However, these ads were commercial, advertising the services of operators themselves or other companies. The providers stated that they show banners only to those users who agreed to display advertising.
