Greenpeace has compiled a rating of Russian regions in terms of official wood harvesting. The first place in it is occupied by the Vologda Oblast - according to the organization, 1.8 cubic meters from the forest hectare are cut down in the region.

How the study was conducted

Greenpeace materials are based on the statistics of a unified interdepartmental information and statistical system for 2021. The organization notes that Emiss data is somewhat different from reality: they do not take into account the so -called hidden rebounds on legal forests, data on cutting in forests with obscure legal status and data on unauthorized cabins.

“Nevertheless, these data quite objectively reflect the distribution of regions on the intensity of forest use,” say in Greenpeace.

What results showed the regions of the northwest

In addition to the Vologda region, the organization’s rating included: Karelia - there they cut down 0.83 cubic meters from the hectare of forest; Novgorod region with a value of 0.8 cubic meters per hectare of forest, Pskov region with an estimate of 0.75 cubic meters from the hectare of forest; The Arkhangelsk region, where, according to Greenpeace, 0.71 cubic meters from the hectare of forests are cut down, and the Kaliningrad region with a value of 0.61 cubic meters from the hectare of forest.

Other regions of Russia

In the first twenty Greenpeace rating there is not a single Siberian or Far Eastern subject of Russia. Ecologists explain this by the fact that the most popular forest resources are not the taiga forests of the northern, mountain and permafrost regions of the country, but an array of the middle lane.

“These forests have been mastered by man for several years, the lands are inhabited here, there is all the necessary infrastructure, and the climate is very favorable for forestry. Therefore, it is more profitable to invest forces and means in the development of forestry here, and not to climb into the distant areas of the taiga and cut wild forests there, which are important to preserve biodiversity and climate on the planet,” is affirmed in the report.
