Amnesty 'deeply regrets the pain and anger' following report on Ukrainian military tactics

“Amnesty International deeply regrets the pain and anger our report on Ukrainian military tactics has caused,” the organization said in a letter.

Earlier, Amnesty published a report on the facts of the placement of the Ukrainian military near civilian objects. The organization considered that the military thereby endangered the lives of civilians and violated the norms of international humanitarian law.

After that, the Ukrainian authorities, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, criticized the study. The head of the Ukrainian office of Amnesty International, Oksana Pokalchuk, left her position due to disagreement with the position of the organization.

“Amnesty International's priority in this and every other conflict is to ensure the protection of civilians. Indeed, this was our sole purpose in publishing the latest study. <...> This does not mean that Amnesty International holds the Ukrainian forces responsible for the violations committed by the Russian forces,” the organization said in a letter today.
