In the Old City of Jerusalem, a gunman opened fire on a bus, wounding eight people. The attacker surrendered to the police

On the night of August 14, an armed criminal fired at a bus in the Old City of Jerusalem near the Wailing Wall. Eight people were injured, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said.

Among the victims are a pregnant 30-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man who are in critical condition. According to the Jerusalem Post, the woman gave birth by caesarean section, the child is in serious condition. The US embassy in Jerusalem said there were US citizens among those affected; according to media reports, this is a Hasidic family from the state of New York.

The attacker, 26-year-old East Jerusalem resident Amir Sidawi, surrendered to police. After an hours-long operation to find the perpetrator, police said the suspect surrendered along with the gun that was allegedly fired from, according to the Times of Israel. According to media reports, the suspect took a taxi to the police station, where he surrendered. Together with him, three relatives of the man, including his mother, were detained.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid stated that "anyone who tries to harm us will pay the price for the harm done to civilians." Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for the Palestinian Hamas movement, hailed the attack in Jerusalem, calling it "a natural response to the occupation."

• The attack comes almost a week after Israel completed Operation Dawn on August 7, during which it shelled the Gaza Strip. During the operation, according to the Israeli authorities, the leaders of the Palestinian group "Islamic Jihad" were killed. As the Jerusalem Post notes, this group threatened to attack Israel because of the detention of its ally.
