Policeman who attacked the founder of the Committee Against Torture Igor Kalyapin has been fired

The police officer who attacked the founder of the Committee Against Torture, Igor Kalyapin, has been fired, human rights activist Eva Merkacheva reported.

According to Merkacheva, the policeman's name is Sergei Chernigovsky; he was a major in the criminal investigation department in Nizhny Novgorod.

The human rights activist noted that his colleagues "noticed strange behavior" and that the policeman became aggressive when he drank. "It is obvious that a policeman with such a level of aggression, unable to control himself, considered human rights activists to be malicious enemies," Merkacheva noted.

According to the human rights activist, a criminal case was opened against Chernigovsky. She did not specify under which article of the Criminal Code.

• The attack on Kalyapin took place on August 24. As the human rights activist himself said, he met Chernigovsky at a mutual friend's birthday party. Then they continued drinking at Kalyapin's place - that's where the attack took place. The human rights activist was hospitalized with a concussion. As Baza reported , a police officer filed a harassment complaint against Kalyapin.
