At the age of 91, President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev died, TASS told TASS with reference to the Central Clinical Hospital .

“Tonight after a serious and long illness, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev died,” the agency was told to the Central Design Code.

Mikhail Gorbachev was born on the territory of the current Stavropol Territory. From the age of 15 he worked as an assistant combineer. He graduated from the Law Faculty of Moscow State University, after which he began to work in the Komsomol. In 1971 he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU, in 1985-General Secretary of the Central Committee. As the head of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev announced a course for liberalization, which he called perestroika, and went to rapprochement with the West.

In February 1990, Gorbachev was elected president of the USSR, becoming the first and last person in this position. In August 1991, a group of senior Soviet leaders tried to shift it, announcing the creation of the State Extraordinary Regulation Committee (GKChP), but the putsch failed.

Gorbachev resigned his presidential powers in December 1991-after the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus signed the Belovezhsky agreement on the liquidation of the USSR and the creation of the CIS. After leaving the policy, he created and headed the Gorbachev-Fund, which is engaged in the study of the problems of Russian and world history. In 1996, Gorbachev participated in the elections of the President of Russia, gaining 0.51% of the vote.

In 1990, the politician received the Nobel Prize of the World.
