“Tonight after a serious and long illness, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev died,” they said there. He was 91 years old.

Gorbachev was the Secretary General of the Central Committee of the CPSU from 1985 to 1991, he became the last person in this position. In the late 1980s, Gorbachev became chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, and in 1990-1991-the only president of the USSR. In 1989, under Gorbachev, the war in Afghanistan, which lasted 10 years, ended. In 1990, Gorbachev received the Nobel Prize of the World for contribution to the peace process in relations between the West and the USSR.

During the stay of Gorbachev, a “perestroika” occurred in power - in 1987 it was declared a new state course. It included reforms in the political and economic structure of the USSR. As a result, they introduced publicity (the policy of open activities of state institutions and freedom of information), censorship was canceled and relations with the West improved.

Gorbachev was in power during the collapse of the USSR. On December 25, 1991, he resigned his powers as the President of the USSR, and on December 26, 1991, the Council of the Republic of the Supreme Council of the USSR adopted a declaration of the termination of the existence of the USSR.

In 1993, Gorbachev became a co -founder of Novaya Gazeta, he acquired 10% of the newspaper.
