Elizabeth Saltykova mansion in Bolshaya Morskaya in August attracted the attention of the Investigative Committee and his head Alexander Bastrykin. The contractor began to demolish yard outlets at home-the monument of architecture of the XIX century. Petersburg city defenders called it illegal. Activist Oleg Mukhin was beaten during the picket near the house.
As a result, the UK instituted several criminal cases: about illegal demolition and the attack on Mukhin. The court suspended work in the house. But, according to the Rotonta information , the prosecutor’s office spoke on the side of the builders. According to the project, approved by the City Committee for the Protection of Monuments, in 2023 a hotel should open in the mansion.
What is noteworthy is this house for history and what will happen to the front hall in the rococo style with stucco molding and caryatids if the reconstruction continues? “Paper” found out from one of the authors of the project and from independent experts.
Now the house on Bolshaya Morskaya is surrounded by a fence and hidden behind the false facade. At the entrance there is a broken brick and piles of wooden pallets. Neither builders nor security are visible in the fenced territory. The works are currently suspended by the decision of the Kuibyshevsky district court. The meeting on the dismantling of outbuilding should take place in September.
In 2007, Saltykova’s house, which was then abandoned, was transferred by A-2, which was supposed to rebuild the building for a business center. But the work was not carried out, and the city terminated the contract. In 2016, North Land Company LLC applied for a new reconstruction-to adapt the house and its territory for a hotel for 44 rooms. In 2020, the application was approved. The project is engaged in the Bureau "Studio 44" Nikita Yavein. The developer pledged to save the facade and the front building.
In August 2022, the builders demolished three outbuildings of the mansion-this turned out to be possible after KGIOP recognized them with emergency. According to the approved project, the dismantling of the outbuilding is allowed “with their subsequent restoration without changing high -altitude rates of roof skates”, promised to KGIOP. As it is clear now, this meant the construction of a new building.
City defenders argue that the permission to demolish the outbuildings has expired in 2017. In Smolny it was denied. Now the correctness of the documents is established by the court.
The mansion on Bolshaya Morskaya, 51 in 1993 was recognized as a monument of architecture of regional significance. It was built in 1845-1846. Initially, they were engaged in the architect Ponomarev (the name was not preserved)-his authorship belongs, for example, the house in Kuznechny Lane, where the Dostoevsky Museum-apartment is located. Later the house was built by the better famous Herald Bosse. According to his project, a Buturlin house was built on Tchaikovsky, who has recently been under the close attention of city-defenders and local residents due to a color change during the repair.
Now the mansion is named after its owner Elizaveta Pavlovna Saltykova - the daughter of Count Pavel Stroganov and Sofia Golitsyna. She was the granddaughter of Natalia Golitsyna, who is considered the prototype of the countess from the “peak lady” Pushkin. In 1825, Elizaveta Pavlovna married the brightest Prince Ivan Saltykov. Six years later, she widowed and moved to Italy, where Karl Bryullov wrote her portrait with a fan. This picture hangs in the Russian Museum. The princess also belonged to a neo -Gothic cottage on the square near the Black River metro station, which was shot in the Soviet Sherlock Holmes.

In 1855, Saltykova sold the mansion to Count Pavel Shuvalov, and until 1917 he was used as an apartment building, periodically changing the owners. In the 1860s in one of the apartments, Baroness Julia Vrevskaya, the maid of honor of Empress Maria Aleksandrovna, first wife of Alexander II, lived in one of the apartments. She is known for being friends with writers Grigorovich, Sologob, Turgenev, Polonsky and even Victor Hugo, artists Vereshchagin and Aivazovsky. With the beginning of the Russo-Turkish war, she organized a sanitary detachment and became a sister of mercy. In 1877, Vrevskaya died at the front from typhoid. Turgenev and Polonsky devoted poetry to her.
After the revolution, the Directorate of the Tanner Trust and the District Military Commissariat was placed in the mansion. The zero house came into desolation.
In the Studio 44, the “paper” replied that in case of resumption of work, the facial corps and the front hall of the mansion will retain the historical appearance. “Everything that is subject to restoration will be restored. Work will be carried out using authentic materials. Why invent what was not? A chandelier will appear in the hall in a minimalist style, but such that it approaches the interior, ”said Grigory Ivanov, architect of the bureau. Photos of the original appearance of the front hall were not preserved. The architect of Studio 44 assures that they are advised about the exterior and interior with experts and KGIOP.
According to the St. Petersburg restorer Vitaly Ivanov, authentic materials are wide: it can be called authentic use of glue from swimming bubbles of sturgeons, and this can be considered the refusal of mounting foam. Specific conditions should be spelled out in the documents approved by KGIOP, but they are not published. Business, Ivanov notes, can approach the restoration differently. “As practice shows, we lose more than we gain anew,” Ivanov said “paper” . In the absence of a photo, when restoring interiors, he said, design documents or descriptions from architectural magazines can be used.
The city defender Oleg Mukhin, as he answered with “paper” , has no doubt that the front building of the mansion will be restored. The developer’s commercial interest, in his opinion, was just to clear the yard from the outbuilding and build a new six -story building of the hotel with underground parking there. The architect of Studio 44 Grigory Ivanov claims that the mansion will not suffer from this. The city defenders are sure that the outbuilding also represented historical value, and are ready to defend this in court.
