Russia has ceased to be a member of the Human Rights Convention

On September 16, Russia has officially ceased to be a country - a member of the European Convention on Human Rights. Six months have passed since the exclusion of Russia from the Council of Europe in connection with the Russian armed invasion of Ukraine.

The press release of the European Court of Human Rights says that the ECHR has abolished the position of judge from Russia, which was occupied by Mikhail Lobov since the beginning of 2022. At the same time, the document emphasizes that the court is competent to consider cases against Russia about any alleged violations of human rights that were committed until September 16, 2022. Currently, more than 17 thousand complaints are expected against permits against Russia. Among them are the claims filed in connection with the invasion of Ukraine.

On the eve of the ECHR, he published 163 decisions on claims against Russia. The main articles, which, according to the ECHR, were violated by Russia, became the right to fair trial, prohibition of torture, the right to personal freedom and immunity and the right to respect private life.

Russia was excluded from the Council of Europe on March 16 due to a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In response, Moscow decided not to comply with the decision of the ECHR made after this date. The relevant law was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 11. The Russian authorities have already refused to execute the court decisions adopted after March 16 in a number of resonant cases, for example, on the so -called foreign agents.
