Russia decided not to nominate the film for an Oscar

Russia will not submit the film to the Oscars, which will be awarded in February 2023.

“The Presidium of the Russian Film Academy has decided not to nominate a domestic film for the Oscar of the American Film Academy in 2022,” the message on the website of the Russian organization says.

The film academy did not specify why such a decision was made.

on September 23 TASS wrote that the opinions of Russian filmmakers regarding the need to nominate the film for an Oscar were divided. For example, Alexei Uchitel and Andrei Konchalovsky, members of the Russian Oscar Committee, believed that Russia should nominate the film "despite the political situation." The chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, Nikita Mikhalkov, was convinced that it was pointless to do so.

• In the long list of Russian films, from which it was supposed to choose a nominee for the Oscar, there were 122 films.
• At the end of 2021, Russia nominated for the Oscar the painting “Unclenching Fists” by Kira Kovalenko. The film was not included in the final list of nominees.
• The last two times films from Russia were included in the final lists of Oscar nominees in 2014 and 2017. These were the paintings "Leviathan" and "Dislike" by Andrei Zvyagintsev. They did not receive an award.
