White House: Russians fleeing mobilization can apply for asylum in the United States

Russian citizens who are hiding from mobilization can apply for asylum in the United States. This was stated by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

“We believe that regardless of their nationality, they can apply for asylum in the US and each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis,” said Jean-Pierre.

The US authorities welcome "anyone who seeks asylum," the White House press secretary added. It did not follow from her words that the Russians fleeing the mobilization would be given some kind of priority order or special conditions for granting asylum.

Earlier, the German authorities said that, under certain circumstances, they are ready to provide asylum to deserters from the Russian army and "opponents of the Putin regime."

• Mobilization in Russia was announced on 21 September. Since then, thousands of people have left the country. Only neighboring Kazakhstan, Georgia, Mongolia and Finland received almost 200 thousand Russians.
• Some EU countries - in particular, Latvia and the Czech Republic - have announced that they will not issue visas to Russians who are hiding from mobilization.
• In turn, the European Commission said that the European Union must guarantee the right of entry for Russians seeking asylum in the context of mobilization.
